Paper has an inherent property of being both fragile and strong, reflecting the delicate balance of the natural world. This juxtaposition is what drew me to working with paper with such intensity. I am interested in investigating how this balance connects me to my surroundings. Working with paper allows me to reflect on my relationship with the earth while using natural plant materials as the primary medium for my work.
Over the centuries, papermakers have established traditional methods of working. I have researched many of these methods in my practice but do not feel bound to them. I have created my own techniques for working with paper pulp. I use the traditional method and experiment with dipping, spraying, molding, and layering my pieces. I am excited to be a part of the artists bringing this unique medium into a contemporary context.
Paper pulp medium still has much to teach me. I am interested in diving deeper into the life cycles of native plants and how they connect to their ecosystems with the intent of sustainable harvest for paper making. I aim to create artwork that speaks to the fragility and strength of the natural materials that made the art.
